Alex M. Pearce
Ellis & Winters LLP attorney Alex Pearce was recently interviewed by Bloomberg BNA about a recent decision by a federal court in California in a case brought by the Federal Trade Commission against computer networking equipment manufacturer D-Link Corp. The article, “D-Link Ducks Some FTC Internet of Things Data Security Claims,” addresses the court’s dismissal of claims brought by the FTC alleging that D-Link’s use of lax security measures for its wireless routers and internet cameras constitutes an “unfair” business practice.
In the interview, Mr. Pearce discusses the decision’s potential impact on the FTC’s authority to regulate companies’ privacy and data security practices, and the need for companies to exercise caution in the data security promises they make about their products.
Mr. Pearce concentrates his practice in Privacy and Data Security law. He partners with organizations to provide strategic and practical guidance on matters that implicate domestic and international privacy and data security considerations. He has been certified by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) as a Certified Information Privacy Professional/United States (CIPP/US) and as a Certified Information Privacy Technologist (CIPT). In 2017 the IAPP recognized him as a Fellow of Information Privacy (FIP).
