Overview
Marie is an experienced trial and litigation attorney who joined the firm’s Litigation Group after serving as Chief of the Civil Division at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Alaska. At Ellis & Winters, she focuses her practice on complex commercial litigation including products liability, medical malpractice, and employment issues.
While with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Marie handled high-stakes, complex cases involving torts, medical malpractice, employment law, challenges to federal agency action, and fraud in federal district court and the Ninth Circuit. She also led the team of civil attorneys and paralegals handling all civil litigation for the District across various areas of law. Additionally, she managed the Financial Litigation Program, which collects debts on behalf of crime victims and federal agencies. Prior to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Marie served as an Assistant Public Defender in Alaska and first-chaired dozens of bench and jury trials. She also clerked for the Honorable Gregory L. Heath in Palmer Superior Court.
Marie earned her law degree, cum laude, from Washington & Lee School of Law, where she received an academic scholarship and served as Notes Editor on the Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice. Prior to law school, Marie received a B.A. in Creative Writing and English, magna cum laude, from Drury University, where she also received an academic scholarship.
Marie enjoys interacting with clients and handling expert and fact depositions. Additionally, she is intensely interested in determining the strategic moves needed to handle client matters throughout all phases of the litigation process.
When not busy handling cases on behalf of her clients, Marie spends time reading and enjoying the great outdoors with her husband, daughter, and dog.
