Paul K. Sun, Jr. elected to American Law Institute
Ellis & Winters LLP is pleased to announce that Paul K. Sun Jr. has been elected to The American Law Institute (ALI), a highly selective and distinguished group of judges, lawyers and law professors from all areas of the United States and from many foreign countries. ALI members are selected on the basis of professional achievement and demonstrated an interest in improving the law.
Mr. Sun’s law practice focuses primarily on business litigation and appeals. He has trial experience in the areas of trade secrets and unfair competition, business and health care fraud (civil and criminal), employment, consumer claims, premises and product liability, and contract disputes. Mr. Sun has tried cases as varied as health care fraud, product liability/wrongful death and First Amendment. He also regularly handles civil and criminal appeals in the North Carolina and federal appellate courts.
Mr. Sun presently serves as the Rules Editor for the American Bar Association’s Appellate Practice Journal. In 2006, 2007 and 2008 he was recognized by North Carolina Super Lawyers and was named in Best Lawyers in America and Chambers USA Leading Lawyers in 2007. He was also admitted to the American College of Trial Lawyers in September 2008. Mr. Sun received his undergraduate degree from Wittenberg University, his master’s degree from Vanderbilt University, and his J.D. from Duke University, with highest honors.
The ALI, founded in 1923 and based in Philadelphia, Pa., drafts and then publishes various restatements and principles of the law, model codes, and other proposals for legal reform through a careful and deliberative process, “to promote the clarification and simplification of the law and its better adaption to social needs, to secure the better administration of justice, and to encourage and carry on scholarly and scientific legal work.” These restatements and principles of law, model codes and legal studies are used as references by the entire legal profession.
To further its law-reform work, the Institute seeks out individuals who reflect the excellence and diversity of today’s legal profession. ALI membership is a distinct professional honor, and the number that can be admitted is limited to 3,000. Current members may propose for a membership only those who combine high character and ability, as well as manifest professional standing.
